Why Should I Grow Up Now?

When you gave me a hand-
Assuring love and guidance,
At every walk in life;
A shoulder-
That fed comfort and understanding,
Whenever I grieved and felt low;
A yoke of words-
That cured all my wounds,
When I was in pain;
Why should I grow up now?

When you gave me the roots-
I needed at every step of life,
Even when I tumbled down while crawling;
A heart-
That loved me and shed tears for me,
Even when I was enraged;
And something yet so special-
You held my finger and taught me,
How to walk unshod on roses and thorns;
Why should I grow up now?

You chime in that I need to grow up:
But, I am still a tenderfoot,
Who falls in every endeavor to rise,
Who yearns for your finger to roll out,
And defy all challenges without cowardice.
You acceded to escort me on every road,
I am off the beaten track without you;
How could you leave me deserted in the dust?
I would always need you to wing my flight,
So why should I Grow Up Now?
